A few friends and I wanted to go for coffee today and I suggested the Artisan Gluten Free Bakery. Selfishly, I wanted to try another 100% gluten free cafe that has recently popped up in London. There is something so wonderful about walking into a cafe and being able to eat anything on the menu – a complete novelty for any person following a gluten free diet.
Apart from the lack of Sundayesque music, the place was buzzing with people which was fantastic to see considering most class being gluten free as niche. We took a table for 4 and as we waited for a few of our friends to arrive we ordered coffee and toast to share. The coffee was fantastic and the toast, freshly made gluten free bread, was delicious. It was also great to know that if I wanted to take some home with me I could buy a loaf on my way out (starting at £4.99 a loaf – pricey but justifiable considering bread from a supermarket is around the £3 mark).
When my friends arrived I ordered a GFB breakfast sandwich with 2 locally produced gluten free sausages while my boyfriend ordered the stack of pancakes with bacon and maple syrup. I thought my portion was very generous at a cost of £3.75 which included a side salad, the bread was the same as before and delicious but I was a little disappointed with the sausages – they just didn’t quite taste like meat (and no I didn’t order vegetarian sausages). I wouldn’t however, not go back because of this as I think gluten free sausages are one of those items that are easily available in supermarkets now so maybe I am a little spoilt in that respect.
My boyfriend had a really generous portion of pancakes and really enjoyed them – he said they didn’t taste any different to regular pancakes and would order them again. I also tried his pancakes and thought they were delicious.
Although we only sampled a few items on the menu, we are looking forward to visiting the Artisan Gluten Free Bakery again to taste their lunch menu which includes quiches, lasagnes, pies, burgers and sandwiches.
Sounds good will have to keep this in mind next time I visit London 🙂
